A Book Review of Cold Mountain Essay Example For Students

A Book Review of Cold Mountain Essay I am coming home one way or another, and I do not know how things might stand between us. I first thought to tell in this letter what I have done and seen so that you might judge me before I return. But I decided it would need a page as broad as the blue sky to write that tale, and I have not the will or the energy. Cold Mountain Charles Frazier Introduction Cold Mountain was written by Charles Frazier. Charles Frazier was an Anthony Ming Ellas star. Sorely wounded and fatally disillusioned in the fighting at Petersburg, Inman, a Confederate soldier, decides to walk back to his home in the Blue Ridge Mountains and to Ada, the woman he loved there years before. His trek across the disintegrating South brings him into intimate and sometimes lethal converse with slaves and marauders, bounty hunters and witches, both helpful and malign. At the same time, Ada is trying to revive her fathers derelict farm and learn to survive in a world where the old certainties have been swept away. As it interweaves their stories, Cold Mountain asserts itself as an authentic American Odysseyhugely powerful, majestically lovely, and keenly moving. Comment Cold Mountain is a masterpiece that is at once an enthralling adventure, a stirring love story, and a luminous evocation of a vanished American in all its savagery, solitude, and splendor. The writer was great. He profoundly insight into the relationship between man and land, also he describes the danger of loneliness. He has a remarkably keen insight into the changes of society, just as the other writers in 19th century. The novel recreates a disappeared world which existed years ago. Nowadays it still has the amazing meaning. Theme Analysis The most outstanding theme is the desire for home. The entire story of Inman centers on this goal. When the landscape appears more like home, he is driven onward. When he thinks of being home with Ada, he perseveres. For Ada the desire for home is less physical. She is pursuing an emotional need to find her place in nature and to establish the feeling of being at home on the mountain. Another major theme is that of endurance. It is clear that no matter what obstacle Inman is confronted with, he will go on. His longing for home and for Ada persist. He drives himself, unyieldingly, despite all dangers. A less dramatic but more pervasive theme is mans relationship to the land. Humanity has a place in nature that aligns with the old life ways. Few, if any, contemporary readers thread beans to make leatherbritches or make home made harrow, yet these and other early nineteenth century practices are paid homage to in the writing of this book. There is a value in the old way of life where people depended on the land, limited desires, and made due with what nature provided. A lesser theme is that of how the lives of soldiers and civilians alike are transformed by the war. The mountain people especially were caught between the two different economies of the war. Though they had no ties to either slave agriculture or industrial capitalism, their homes and lives were all but destroyed. The theme of the danger of solitude is also presented. In scenes where Inman or Ada are left to their own thoughts, their moods degenerate and their thoughts become negative. They do battle with their own psyches that have been assaulted by loneliness. Also, the goat womans thoughts and Inmans views on her life exemplify this theme. Impressions After I read the book, I found I was shocked. Not only was I shocked by the firm love between Inman and Ada, but also the war. In the beginning of the story, the writer shows us beautiful scenery. Cold Mountain is the main sign in this novel. Ada and Inman fall in love at first sight. But at that time, they cant say everything on their minds. Their love is pure. When the war comes, Inman is set on leaving for the front. Before he leaves, Ada sends him a book and a picture of herself. They kiss and swear they will wait for each other. There is a scene impresses me. When Ada was praying in the church, a dove flies into the church. She was afraid. Inman caught it. And it stands on Inmans arm. I think the writer want to convey the peace to us. Inman doesnt want to kill people, but in fact he has to kill the enemies and protects his friends. .u8038ed0442a916fa85ed248047c3162d , .u8038ed0442a916fa85ed248047c3162d .postImageUrl , .u8038ed0442a916fa85ed248047c3162d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8038ed0442a916fa85ed248047c3162d , .u8038ed0442a916fa85ed248047c3162d:hover , .u8038ed0442a916fa85ed248047c3162d:visited , .u8038ed0442a916fa85ed248047c3162d:active { border:0!important; } .u8038ed0442a916fa85ed248047c3162d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8038ed0442a916fa85ed248047c3162d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8038ed0442a916fa85ed248047c3162d:active , .u8038ed0442a916fa85ed248047c3162d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8038ed0442a916fa85ed248047c3162d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8038ed0442a916fa85ed248047c3162d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8038ed0442a916fa85ed248047c3162d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8038ed0442a916fa85ed248047c3162d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8038ed0442a916fa85ed248047c3162d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8038ed0442a916fa85ed248047c3162d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8038ed0442a916fa85ed248047c3162d .u8038ed0442a916fa85ed248047c3162d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8038ed0442a916fa85ed248047c3162d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Home essay on The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr HydeI dont know why there are so wars in history and also nowadays. The wars make people cold and destroy their houses and lands. In this novel, we see the war between the North and south was cruel. Many soldiers died in the war. Many farmers lands were taken by government. Inman was tired of fighting and wanted to go back to his place. So he decided to run away. During his way to Cold Mountain, the writer wrote many things. He exposes the result that the war had brought to people. Wives became widows. Parents had to live by themselves as their children wound never come back. At another time, we can see the growth of Ada, who is a girl. After her father died, she had to learn to earn her living. There is a iron will underlying that soft and fluffy faà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ade. With the help of Ruby, they live happily. Ada likes playing piano. When she practices playing piano, she always misses her beloved Inman. She really hopes he will come back one day and she believes he will come back. Conclusion Cold Mountain is the story of two parallel journeys: Inmans physical trek across the American landscape and Adas internal odyssey toward an understanding of herself. What makes Fraziers novel so satisfying is the depth of detail surrounding both journeys. Frazier based this story on family history, and in the characters of Inman and Ada he has paid a rich compliment to their historical counterparts. Cold Mountain is, quite simply, a wonderful book.

Andrew Jackson Essays - Andrew Jackson, United States,

Caleb Ratliff 12/15/2015 Period 1 American Hero Andrew Jackson Andrew Jackson was a true American leader and his contribution to our country is still felt today. Andrew Jackson started off his life as an orphan and prisoner to the British and he became the seventh president of the United States for two terms and American General in our country. Without Andrew Jackson's bravery and confidence our country would have been very different. His contributions of leading American forces in the Battle of New Orleans, Order of Indian Removal Act, and inheriting the name of the Democratic Party have set them as someone deserving our praise. Their legacy as an orphan to the seventh president of the United States he must be recognized. Andrew Jackson's early life was a little strange compared to ours. Andrew Jackson was born on March 15, 1767 on the border of North and South Carolina. Both of his parents emigrated from Ireland for a new life. After his mom and dad, Andrew Jackson and Elizabeth Hutchinson, died in his early years all he had was his brother who died in a British prison. He got a scar from a British officer when he refused to shine his shoe. As Andrew Jackson grew he became more into politics than before. Soon to move to Tennessee and find the love of his life, Rachel Donelogon. While in Tennessee Andrew Jackson met a man named Charles Dickinson. Charles Dickinson called him a useless, worthless, scoundrel, and a coward. Andrew answered this with a duel. During this duel Andrew was shot about an inch from the heart because of this Andrew could take his time aiming for Charles's heart and pull the trigger. Charles was killed on the spot, and Andrew kept the bullet inside of him f or the rest of his life. After the duel Andrew became into politics and it soared to presidency for two terms. He first started as a troop of the American Revolution fighting the British for independence. He then became a Congressman for Tennessee for two terms then he was also Senator. He then fought in the war of 1812 in which he marched a militia all the way to New Orleans to stop British forces. In this battle Jackson had three lines of attack as soon as they saw the British some fled while some stayed to fight. In the end Jackson's forces beat the British with only 71 casualties. Soon after Jackson took his militia down to Spanish Florida to take it and give it to the United States. Once arriving Jackson fought with Spain and became victorious. The Spanish signed the Adams-Onis Treaty to sign over Florida to the United States. After these events Jackson became the first governor of Florida in 1821. He was the second most patriotic person in the country right under George W ashington. On December 24, 1814 Great Britain and the United States met and worked on a treaty to end the war of 1812. In this time period news went very slowly. The british had a three pronged attack against the United States have beaten the British at two of them, but the British were wanting to cut off trade. They were trying to take over the town of New Orleans. Jackson heard rumors about this and he sent the militia with him as the general they packed and headed down to New Orleans. On January 8, 1815 the two sides clashed in New Orleans. Jackson's plan was to have a barrier with three sides. Once they saw the number of British soldiers some troops ran away to safety while some stayed to fight. After the battle Jackson made the British run and they played the tune of Yankee Doodle while reentering the town.

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck Review

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck Review John Steinbecks Of Mice and Men is a touching tale of the friendship between two men set against the backdrop of the United States during the Depression of the 1930s. Subtle in its characterization, the book addresses the real hopes and dreams of working-class America. Steinbecks short novel raises the lives of the poor and dispossessed to a higher, symbolic level. Its powerful ending is climactic and shocking to the extreme. But, we also come to an understanding of the tragedy of life. Regardless of the sufferings of those who live it, life goes on. Of Mice and Men Overview Of Mice and Men opens with two workers who are crossing the country on foot to find work. George is a cynical, irresolute man. George looks after his companion, Lennie, and treats him like a brother. Lennie is a giant man of incredible strength but has a mental disability that makes him slow to learn and almost child-like. George and Lennie had to flee the last town because Lennie touched a womans dress and hed been accused of rape. They begin to work on a ranch, and they share the same dream: they want to own a piece of land and farm for themselves. These people, like George and Lennie, feel dispossessed and unable to control their own lives. The ranch becomes a microcosm of the American underclass at that time. The climactic moment of the novel revolves around Lennies love of soft things. He pets the hair of Curleys wife, but she gets scared. In the resulting struggle, Lennie kills her and runs away. The farmhands form a lynch mob to punish Lennie, but George finds him first. George understands that Lennie cannot live in the world and wants to save him the pain and terror of being lynched, so he shoots him in the back of the head. The literary power of this book rests firmly on the relationship between the two central characters, their friendship and their shared dream. These two men are so very different, but they come together, stay together, and support each other in a world full of people who are destitute and alone. Their brotherhood and fellowship is an achievement of enormous humanity. They sincerely believe in their dream. All they want is a small piece of land that they can call their own. They want to grow their own crops and breed rabbits. That dream cements their relationship and strikes a chord so convincingly for the reader. George and Lennies dream is the American dream. Their desires are both very particular to the 1930s but also universal. Triumph of Friendship Of Mice and Men is a tale of friendship that triumphs over the odds. But, the novel is also extremely telling about the society in which it is set. Without becoming dogmatic or formulaic, the novel examines many of the prejudices at the time: racism, sexism, and prejudice towards those with disabilities. The power of John Steinbecks writing is that he treats these issues in purely human terms. He sees societys prejudices in terms of individual tragedies, and his characters attempt to escape from those prejudices. In a way, Of Mice and Men is an extremely despondent novel. The novel shows the dreams of a small group of people and then contrasts these dreams with a reality that is unreachable, one they cannot achieve. Even though the dream never becomes reality, John Steinbeck does leave us with an optimistic message. George and Lennie do not achieve their dream, but their friendship stands out as a shining example of how people can live and love even in a word of alienation and disconnectedness.

Organizational Analysis - Research Paper Example Globally, the entity is rated at the 23rd largest firm-entity in terms of composite scale measurements of assets, market value, revenues and profits. Importantly, the entity is rated as the 20th-largest mobile telecom operator globally, providing key telecommunication services to an estimated 120 million plus mobile subscribers. Throughout its years, from the initial government-authorized monopoly of phone services (the Bell System) when the entity was the largest phone company globally, to the 1982 breakup of the monopoly by U.S. regulators, it has been a force to reckon with. As Smith (2013) presents, through subsequently created subsidiaries, the entity was able to be re-founded, after the 2005 SBC acquisition of the former parent company. Further expansion has been witnessed since 2013, when the entity planned entry into Latin America through partnership with America Movil. Additionally, through agreed purchase of DirecTV in 2014, the entity further aims at widening its consumer base to include the fast-growing Latin American market arena. Further acquisition of Mexico’s Iusacell and NII Holdings is expected to solidify its presence in the wider North American frontier. Globally, the entity also offers a variety of services in different locations spread around the Asia Pacific (Smith, 2013). Human resource management (HRM/HR) pertains to the functional role-play present within organizational entities, designed specifically towards maximizing existing employee performance. As Collings and Wood (2009) portray, this is mainly in terms of service of the employer’s core strategic objectives. Accordingly, HR primarily is concerned with the manner in which individuals are managed within various organizations, focusing keenly on present systems and policies. Such responsibility falls upon existing HR departments and associate units within organizations. These are mainly tasked with a variety of core activities such as employee hiring/ recruitment, their

3D printing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

3D printing - Essay Example 3D printing can best be understood by defining a 3D printer. According to Kelly, "A 3D printer is a printer that prints in three dimensions" (5). Deriving from this definition of a 3D printer, 3D printing is therefore printing objects in three dimensions. This technology has transformed printing from the conventional two dimensional methods which lacked height to three dimensions that comprise of height (Kelly 5). To further differentiate between the conventional method of 2D and modern 3D printing, Kelly asserts that whereas ink is used in 2D printing, 3D printing mainly uses plastic in order to achieve a three-dimensional object (7). Through 3D printing, it is easier for individuals to modify products according to customers instructions and needs. This advantage is reiterated by Stephanidis who posits that customized products can easily be created and produced in large quantities through an uncomplicated process made possible by 3D technology (300). Additionally, merchandise can be produced more rapidly and precisely as the process is computerized. People can today purchase a 3D printer at a cheaper price for use at home. It is worth noting that people in the modern world have divergent needs and requirements and hence may require to create specific products to meet their specific needs. An individual can therefore create a product to meet his own need at home and thus making life easier. This saves resources as money that could have otherwise be spent through purchasing the particular product from a shop or other manufacturers is used for other purposes. 3D is today used to create prototypes. In fact, Battersby and Grimes assert that approximately 70 percent of 3D usage today entails prototyping (831). In laymans terms, a prototype is a model or sample that is created for experimentation. Through the use of 3D, an individual can create as many prototypes as possible at a cheaper price until the specifications of the desired product are achieved. There are

Linguistics and Change Essay Example for Free

Linguistics and Change Essay It is very easy to demonstrate to English speakers that languages change over time. (Holmes, 210) Language is always changing just because of the time, the people, the gender, the age, the social class, etc. It is very normal to see even in a decade that language has change in some ways, it always maintain the original background but as it goes changing it may be that you wont recognize it that much. Like an example that is mentioned by Holmes, it says that the k of knit and knife wasnt silent in the fifteenth century. So it can be seen how important the matter of time is in language change. Another example given by Holmes is about the meaning of the words like once nice meant ‘precise, and before that it meant ‘fastidious and earlier still it meant ‘ignorant. Language varies in three ways: -overtime -in physical space -socially Which are the major ways that variation occurs in language. We can understand by variation that is the way language changes, a general term, general changes. And by change we can understand that is when a word, the pronunciation, etc. is modified overtime. In fewer words is the modification of a special concept. So a language change has its origins in variation (Holmes, 212) its understood that when a new form is spread it means that the change its being done. And if at the end the new form is now used instead of the old one it means it has already completed the change. Thats called ‘fait accompli. The changes spread depending on the social factors such as gender, status, age, region, etc. Linguistic changes infiltrate groups from the speech of people on the margins between social or regional groups via the ‘middle people who have contact in more than one group (Holmes 218) this is called change from group to group, and it determines that the middle class has much more contact than for example the high with the low, but as an intermediate the changes can be made in all groups, specially if it comes from the high and it goes to the low. Theres also the change from style to style that is about the formal and casual speech. It goes from a style to another and from an individual to another and from a social group to another. And the change  word to word, sound changes spread through different words one by one. (Holmes, 222) this is known as lexical diffusion and it means it begins in one word and then goes further with similar phonetic sound words. But its not all at the same time. As a conclusion I might say that I think language change is a complex concept because the change involves a lot of factors that make it happen. But at the end it continues happening and wont stop. Thats why the older people barely understand the new changes, but the ones that understand the new ones, will have a hard time with the future ones. Bibliography Holmes, Janet. Violent Media’s Effect on Youth Essay -- Violence

There is no doubt that mass media impacts the people who consume it. While the media was originally designed to inform people, it has now become so much more. Modern media, especially in the area of violence, can have effects on the viewer’s behavior. Unfortunately the negative effects associated with the progression in the media’s communication technology, have begun to outweigh the positive impact of this representation of media. Media is both an important and time-consuming aspect of modern child’s life due to the fact that children from ages eight to eighteen spend about 44.5 hours a week (6.5 hours a day) partaking in media. The media is consumed in forms of the computer and it’s functions with the Internet, television, and interactive video games. All this time consuming these forms of media added up takes up more time than any other events in their lives besides sleeping. It has been said that the presentation of violent media to young children and adolescents has the most harmful effects on children in varying ways. This is supported by the fact that violence in forms of suicide, homicide, and trauma are the leading causes of death in children and young adults, outweighing the cause of death by sickness. Media programs aimed at young audiences have gone as far as becoming very similar to adult programs in terms of content in language and violence. A typical child in the U.S. watches 28 hours of TV weekly, seeing as many as 8,000 murders by the time he or she finishes elementary school at age 11, and worse, the killers are depicted as getting away with the murders 75% of the time while showing no remorse or accountability. Domestic Violence In Sports Essay

Throughout history, sports players have been in the public eye. They’re much thought of as the heroic figures to those who desire a career in the league or even the â€Å"die hard† fans who are dedicated. When thinking of the stereotypical traits of a heroic figure as someone who’s trustworthy, honesty and viewed to be an untouchable individual. But as we all know not every story is what some may call â€Å"picture perfect†. People fail to realize that their champion winning sports players we cheer on during game days are just like everyone in the world. The question being how can we establish a connection with ones that real side may barely be shown? In recent weeks, sports media has been booming with tabloids about domestic violence cases of well-known players in their leagues. As we the public become intrigued to see these players fall from their immortal status from committing such a crime thought to be impossible for them. As fans typically only take a glance of their lives on the field; I come to wonder if it’s more of a shock to them or a reality of everyone’s ability to be held equally. Would the standards be different if your position in society didn’t matter as much as the crime that has been committed should? An article published online in USA Today last week, states that even with the multiple controversies going on in the NFL and the nation, is taking much needed action towards players involved in the domestic violence convictions such as. Actions are also being taken in teams like the Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice, was charged with a domestic violence case with an assault his then-fiancà ©e Janay Rice, who was left unconscious for in an elevator. Rice is known to have a clean record, after authorities released the video of Rice and his then fiancà ©e knocked out; the agreement between the NFL and the Ravens to end Rice’s contract following up with an indefinite suspension. This decision was reported by researchers- Erik Brady and Jim Corbett both journalist for USA Today. In addition to the NFL furthers taking action an article by researcher Will Brinson a Senior NFL Writer, writes weekly articles and directs videos for CBS Sports.com. Brinson quotes statement from a memo from Commissioner Roger Goodell to the 32 NFL owners â€Å"The NFL is hiring four women advisors in shaping the league’s stance on domestic violence†, The league is attempting to change the outlook of how it handles domestic  violence with the hopes of being looked at for an earnest effort towards change. Goodell wrote, â€Å"Because domestic violence and sexual assault are broad societal issues, we have engaged leading experts to provide specialized advice and guidance in ensuring that the NFL’s programs reflect the most current and effective approaches.† In addition to Goodell’s memo, he also stated a plan for the four women such as Lisa Friel, the former Sex Crime Prosecution Unit in New York County District Attorney’s Office to be one of the women to peruse the NFL’s efforts. Domestic violence is the behavior used by one person in a relationship to control the other. This violence takes place in many forms and can happen all the time or once in a while. Although both men and women are susceptible to abuse, the most common cases are known to be found dealing with women who have been in some form neglected or abused. In studies cases of domestic violence have been on the rise, meaning more cases of not just celebrities but people all around the nat ion. As the talk rises of domestic violence cases pertaining to sports people see this as tragedy and a new cause to crime that has been happening for decades. It’s taken little pity on the actual victim but more on the player who is at fault. In the SBNation article written by Stephen â€Å"Poseour† Blake, stating that most fans are leaning towards defending team players rather than raising awareness for those who have been emotionally and physically impacted by the crime done. When do we ask ourselves, is supporting something worth it? With a personal belief that we should live by the rules of treating everyone with fairness and honesty as fans indicate sports players to be. In conclusion, I think that athletes are treated to an alternate standard compared to everyone because more is invested into their successful than their downfall. More cases of domestic violence are becoming better known to the public; especially in sports mostly pertaining to players in the NFL league. My feelings towards this topic are that even with fame of being known for a talent is a very rare accomplishment that’s few get to achieve. People still need to realize that no matter how famous a person becomes their still accountable for their actions. Personally I think that more should be done to the person accused of the crime just as equally for someone who isn’t on the fame radar. Punishment shouldn’t have a limit just because this person is well- known. Alon g with fans treating the victims more like the criminals instead of the players. When in reality  being a â€Å"die hard† fan doesn’t always mean supporting what’s wrong.

What does the notion of legitimacy and social contract...

What does the notion of legitimacy and social contract have to do with corporate disclosure policies? Introduction In recent years, corporations have increasingly used their annual reports to voluntarily report information relating to their social actions, particularly those concerning the natural environment (Gray et al.1995). More specifically, corporations have been changing their disclosure policy towards the triple bottom line reporting, where in addition to economic performance, social and environmental issues of the companys performance are given (Deegan 2002). This has drawn the attention of researchers, and a number of theories have been postulated as to why companies disclose such information. According to Deegan and Rankin†¦show more content†¦The organisations have no natural right to these benefits, and in order to allow their existence, society would expect the benefits to exceed the costs to society. The society allows the corporation to operate as long as it meets their expectations. Again considering the Legitimacy Theory, the organisation should consider the rights of t he public at large, not merely those of its investors. If the company fails to meet these expectations, the society would react by imposing sanctions, for example legal restrictions or high taxes, fines, demand reduction of the companys products, eliminating the supply for labour and financial capital top the business. Heard and Bolce (1981) argue that with such high social expectations, a successful corporation would react and attend to the environmental and social consequences of their activities. Thus, organisations would take various actions to ensure that their operations are perceived legitimate. They will attempt to establish congruence between the social values associated with or implied by their activities and the norms of acceptable behaviour in the larger social system of which they are part (Dowling and Pfeffer, p.110).
